Many people believe that if they buy the highest octane gasoline available for their vehicle they are getting the most power, and by using a Top Tier Fuel they are keeping their engines clean inside. This is not necessarily true. What more is there to know?
Plenty. Higher octane gasoline does not necessarily provide more power - and the detergents in top tier fuels actually increase combustion chamber deposits on the cylinder heads even though they keep the intake valves and injectors cleaner. Top Tier Fuels are created with detergent additives that clean the upper parts of the engine but leave deposits of their own inside the combustion chamber.
A recent extensive study conducted by the American Automobile Association proved the value of Top Tier Fuels in increasing upper engine cleanliness, but it must be noted that this extensive testing also showed measured increases of carbon deposits on the cylinder heads with no reduction of deposits on the piston tops.
Higher octane fuels don't necessarily provide more power. The function of octane is to slow down the detonation process so that the engine doesn't fire prematurely, causing engine knock. High performance engines require higher octane because of the high compression ratios in their cylinders which creates significantly more heat than other engine designs. Use of higher octane fuels in engines that don't require it can actually degrade power.
Most high performance engines require "premium" (93) octane fuel, but the majority of vehicles are designed to run on less expensive "regular" (87) octane fuel. There is really no other benefit to the extra cost of higher octane unless your engine knocks during heavy acceleration. So why is mid-grade 89 octane gasoline so prevalent?
Combustion chamber deposits and octane requirement increase: This is where combustion chamber deposits enter the discussion. Regardless of the type or brand of fuel used, carbon deposits are left inside the combustion chamber and on the piston tops with each firing of the engine. As these deposits build up they not only trap heat but also take up space, which creates increased heat and pressure in the combustion chamber and requires higher octane to prevent engine knock. This is called octane requirement increase. Stepping up to a mid-grade fuel with a higher octane rating can help remedy this problem. At the same time, the engine's anti-knock sensors can also activate and retard the spark - which eliminates the knock but results in lost power.
